The global tourism sector is entering a new historic development context, according to the WTM Global Travel Report presented at the leading tourism exhibition World Travel Market, which is currently taking place in London.
The global travel ecosystem is expected to outpace the global economy in growth over the next 10 years, continuing its dynamic path of recovery and restructuring after the pandemic.
The report, prepared in collaboration with Oxford Economics’ Tourism Economics, forecasts annual growth of 3.5% for the travel industry through 2035, compared to 2.5% of total global GDP. In absolute terms, tourism’s economic contribution is expected to exceed $16 trillion, representing almost 12% of global economic output. This forecast signals the strengthening of tourism as one of the most strategic sectors of the global economy.
Consumer behavior is evolving rapidly, with international travelers prioritizing travel over material goods. The shift toward more meaningful and experiential travel experiences is a strong trend. Authentic environments, contact with the local community, and gastronomy are now key criteria for choosing a destination. The increased demand for authentic experiences and local storytelling is leading destinations and hospitality businesses to redefine their product.
In terms of infrastructure, the industry is in a phase of extensive expansion. Over 15,000 new aircraft are on the order books of Boeing and Airbus, while the global cruise market is forecast to exceed 38 million passengers by 2025, with the entry of 15 new ships and new brands such as AROYA Cruises. Accordingly, the hotel stock is being strengthened with over 500,000 new rooms worldwide within the year and an additional 1 million rooms under construction. However, the overall conclusion of the report is clear: the global tourism sector is at the beginning of a new cycle, in which catalysts such as technology, experiential values, international mobility and infrastructure investments are shaping a stronger, more diversified and resilient tourism environment.
