GREENLINE 33 Going Green

Straight from Slovenia and the famous J&J design studio, this is a nearly 10-meter boat with a hybrid DNA. Boasting a technology borrowed from the future and applied today, Greenline 33 is a fully-fledged choice offering comfortable living to families, the luxury of autonomy and proper energy management.

Greenline 33 is a motor cruiser, the result of extensive studies carried out by the Jakopin brothers of J&J in close cooperation with Seaway shipyards which have undertaken dozens of successful projects. It features a diesel engine by Volkswagen and a hybrid energy bank which provides the power needed for appliances and propulsion. It is also the first boat ever produced with both hybrid and solar technology. Greenline 33 was launched at the great Dusseldorf Boat Show and it has since won important distinctions both inside Slovenian borders and in international competitions. Among them are the titles of European Boat of the Year, Innovative Design and the Swedish Environmental Award which it won for its ecological approach.

Goinggreen

Greenline 33 is a cruiser with classic lines and a superstructure with a closed cabin. It was fully constructed by Seaway, a shipyard with modern facilities and infrastructure. The overall length reaches 9.99 metres, the maximum beam is 3.49 metres, the draft when loaded is at 0.70 metres while the displacement when empty reaches 4.5 tons. The hull is large and the so-called “superdisplacement” geometry has been patented by the shipyard. Naturally, the boat’s performance is conventional and reliable, as we can see, for safe boating. As regards this category we consider fuel-saving more important than high performance. Getting down to brass tacks, in terms of consumption and propulsion Greenline has a Volkswagen (SD 75-5) diesel engine installed with a maximum speed of 11 knots and a range of 700 nautical miles at 7 knots. Alternatively, it comes with a more powerful Volkswagen (SD 165-5) engine that can reach a top speed of 15 knots. However, the main difference from other boats is that Greenline’s engine box is “green”. Next to the diesel engine that sets the axial system in motion there is an energy bank, a series of rechargeable lithium batteries that are charged in several ways and secure both the proper operation of appliances and cruising at rather low speed and, of course, time. The batteries, which are at the heart of hybrid technology, are charged almost at all modes of operation: when the boat is moored to the dock, it is supplied with 230V from the shore power supply and the inverter provides as much as 3kW. When underway and with the motor on, the batteries are charged and have a voltage of 5kW. During the cruise and while off shore the solar energy is transformed into electric energy since the entire roof surface is covered in solar panels, thus producing energy and charging the batteries.

As for propulsion, the boat has an axial system which finally reaches the propeller. According to the shipyard, it consumes up to four times less than a same-size boat with a planing hull. Charged mainly by means of electric energy, this boat can execute manoeuvres inside the marina or run at up to 6 knots with a range of up to 20 nautical miles. These figures are quite satisfactory taking into account the fact that no waste goes in the marina waters whereas in the case of an engine failure we can get to a port as far as 20 miles away.

Comfort underway

This boat is considered ideal for cruises with family or friends. The main deck has an outdoor sitting area with teak hardwood flooring, a feature appearing also at the sidewalks leading safely to the bow. Moving on to the interior, we are welcomed by a cosy and bright area with large glass surfaces offering a panoramic view to the passengers and ample visibility to the person at the steer. The living room with the two sofas to port and starboard and the low table are next to a well-equipped kitchen. Going down to the lower deck, the double-bed master cabin is at the bow and has several storage areas with the toilet and shower standing close at hand. Right at the centre there is a sitting area which converts to a double-bed that sleeps two.

The interior has been designed in order to host a four-member family or a group of friends so that the boat offers the necessary ease without causing any discomfort even after several days on board and during longer cruises. This, combined with the low fuel consumption makes it an ideal choice for those opting for the long cruise.

To sum up

Greenline 33 is “green” and leads the way to a new era in recreational boat building and sets a new line of thought about the use of such boats. Its designing and conception were the result of the universal need for a different management of energy sources aiming at bringing the least possible distress to the seas. We are facing a trend that is more than a fad in shipbuilding: it is a dictate, a true necessity.
