RINA, a new identity marked by digitalisation
RINA, a new identity marked by digitalisation

In December 2017, RINA, the certification, testing, inspection and consultancy multinational, unveiled its new corporate brand identity to clients worldwide.

RINA's new positioning acknowledges the new role of digitalisation. This is not only evident within the company’s own in-house processes, but also the external services it offers through the strategic application of technology, such as big data and artificial intelligence.

RINACube is a cloud-based platform, created by a dedicated team of 50 people within RINA. This platform guides clients through the process of predictive asset management. In addition, this tool can interact with the most common technologies, making it easy to use for everyone, from large multinationals to companies in the retail sector, helping them to reduce costs. This new approach leverages the latent value of existing available data, through which companies gain competitive market advantage.

RINA has been recognised throughout its history for reliability, credibility and impartiality. Those values have now been incorporated within the digital platform that will convert data into useful actionable information, seamlessly integrating all parties within a system. For example, in the management of the logistics chain, the platform can be used throughout the whole process, with information being securely accessed by authorised users at all stages, resulting in the optimisation of the entire process.

In the oil sector, it is estimated that digital asset management, using sensor networks for example, can reduce costs by 25% and increase production by 8%. The advantages of digital innovation are also represented by the possibility of creating a digital twin at the design stage of an infrastructure, by predictive maintenance and by improved energy efficiency management. Training also benefits from the opportunities offered by digitalisation. RINA is already developing and managing new virtual immersive environment training programs.

RINACube has been designed to operate in all the sectors in which RINA is active.

Main steps for the Marine sector

RINACube, that has the ambition to host many marine services and to be open to integrate third party data and applications, is the solution to offer to ship owners and ship operators a new concept of data monitoring and analysis platforms and to provide powerful analytics capabilities to extract value and business insights from data collected.

With its industry expertise and dedicated software resources, digitalisation services are a growing part of the RINA business, both core (i.e. e-certificates) and more innovative. Its understanding of naval architecture, the knowledge of international and local regulations and its third-party attitude to independently validate data from different sources provides a 360° set of skills ship operators trust and rely on.

During 2018, RINA’s platform was seamlessly integrated with over 200 energy management systems previously installed.

Cutting-Edge Operating Centre for Global Fleet

d’Amico Group, a world leader in maritime transportation in the dry cargo and product tankers sectors, RINA and Telemar have partnered to build a new Fleet Digital Operating Centre in Rome, Italy. The new centre will increase data collection from ships and provide greater detail on performance criteria to enable d’Amico Group to increase efficiency and safety across the fleet.

The project, which officially started at the beginning of May 2018, is an example of an increasing trend towards digitalisation within the maritime industry. As well as providing d’Amico Group with intelligence about operations on which to base strategic business decisions and operational improvements, the level of information from fleet vessels will enable expert support during emergency situations and efficient planning of predictive maintenance to maximize vessel availability.

RINA launches the first Digital Ship Notation

In September 2018, RINA launched the Digital Ship Notation, the first additional class notation available for shipowners willing to demonstrate the added value of their ship or fleet through the efficient use of digital technology.

GNV was the first company to receive the new notation, certifying 11 ships of its fleet, all equipped with a data collection system: the synergy with RINA, launched in 2012, has led to the development of the Digital Ship project on board of the GNV vessels, thanks to which an important path for fleet performance management was launched.

The certificate is assigned to ships fitted with a navigation and machinery data collection system that enables its transmission on shore. The information will be, then, stored in the RINACube platform.

Thanks to RINA’s Digital Ship Notation, owners will be able to have objective evidence of their effort to continuously monitor the ship and will have access the cost saving opportunities given by the optimization of processes allowed by data analysis.

RINA strongly believes that digitalisation will have a major impact within the shipping industry and that this type of notation could be included, in the future, as a requirement for the classification of newbuilds. This class notation marks the first step towards a new type of relationship between ship owners and class societies, working together towards an efficient, safe and sustainable shipping industry through the best use of data.

Latest developments in Greece

Technomar Shipping Inc.

RINA’s digital approach has successfully landed in Greece and Hellenic shipowners are showing their interest in the opportunities given by the advanced data management offered by the RINACube platform.

Technomar Shipping Inc. has recently begun a pilot project on two of its container ships for the use of RINACube OPTIMUM, the modular digital solution that addresses the complex issue of managing a fleet’s performance.

Given the ship’s speed and loading conditions, setting the correct ship’s longitudinal asset (i.e. trim) can have a significant impact on the hull resistance in the water and, therefore, on the propulsion power needed to maintain the required speed.

In some trading areas attention must be given by the crew to environmental restrictions (i.e. emissions in ECA areas) or to local regulations (i.e.  in ports) of safe sailing (i.e. in between islands or in proximity of shallow waters). Those and other tasks are even more complex for operators managing a whole fleet of ships of different type, age and size, trading worldwide.

OPTIMUM provides shipowners and operators with a suite of modules that can be customised on specific needs and address various aspects that tackled through an appropriate management of data leads to energy saving and ultimately reduced costs.

Piraeus global strategic training centre

To acknowledge the trust given to RINA by the maritime Greek community, RINA has recently established the company’s global maritime training centre in Piraeus. From here, not only Hellenic shipowners and operators will be able to have their provider at the doorstep, but the whole industry will benefit from long-term competence and strategic vision.

RINA provides a wide range of services across the Energy, Marine, Certification, Transport & Infrastructure and Industry sectors. With a turnover in 2017 of 437 million Euros, about 3,700 employees and 170 offices in 65 countries worldwide, RINA is a member of key international organizations and an important contributor to the development of new legislative standards.
