The North Face Brought “the Mountain Closer to Everyone” at Messinia Challenge 2026
Half marathon, hiking activities, climbing, and unique outdoor experiences in nature at Greece’s largest multisport event
Staying true to its iconic motto, “Never Stop Exploring,” The North Face once again brought its philosophy to life at Messinia Challenge 2026, continuing a long-standing presence that began in 2013 with outdoor activities designed to bring “the mountain closer to everyone.” As one of the world’s leading outdoor apparel and equipment brands, the company was at the heart of the event’s most important activities, supporting an event that unites sports, nature, exploration, and a sustainable lifestyle experience.
With this spirit, The North Face inspired participants of all ages to discover the natural landscapes of Messinia through movement, adventure, and connection with nature, highlighting the region as a premier destination for outdoor experiences.
As a Gold Sponsor of the event, The North Face supported two flagship activities: the 21.1 km Half Marathon powered by The North Face, one of the most impressive running routes in Greece, and the new outdoor experience Never Just A Hike powered by The North Face, which was introduced for the first time at the event.
The Half Marathon powered by The North Face
The Half Marathon powered by The North Face gave participants the opportunity to run through the unique natural landscapes of Messinia, alongside the sea, through protected Natura 2000 areas, and along routes that showcased the authentic beauty of the region. Runners from Greece and abroad experienced something far beyond a simple race, turning their participation into a true journey of exploration.
At the same time, The North Face stood by the athletes by offering gifts to all half marathon finishers, enhancing their experience and rewarding their effort.
First Presentation of “Never Just A Hike”
A particularly special highlight was Never Just A Hike powered by The North Face, a new hiking experience that joined the Messinia Challenge program for the first time and gave participants the opportunity to discover the Messinian landscape through a different, immersive approach. The activity took place in stunning natural locations across the region, from Palaio Kastro to Voidokilia Beach, showcasing the authenticity, tranquility, and unexplored side of Messinia, perfectly aligned with The North Face philosophy of outdoor culture and limitless exploration.
After all, the uniqueness of Messinia lies precisely in the diversity of its landscapes: from one moment to the next, you move from the mountains to the sea, cross trails between waterfalls, and arrive at a medieval castle. It is this rare variety of experiences, located just a short distance from one another, that transforms every outing into a complete journey of exploration.
And all of this took place with absolute safety and respect for the environment. The activities were designed for small groups that would not burden the natural surroundings, included clean-up actions in the areas visited by participants, and were guided by trained professionals accompanying participants every step of the way — an approach that reflects The North Face’s commitment to responsible and sustainable exploration that protects the very nature inviting us to discover it.
Safe Climbing Experiences for All Ages
A special place in the program was also dedicated to the climbing experience powered by The North Face at the indoor climbing wall of Costa Navarino, organized with the support of Moraitis Outdoors. With maximum safety, specialized equipment, and experienced instructors, dozens of children enthusiastically participated, discovering the world of climbing through an interactive and fun experience that strengthened both confidence and teamwork.
An Award with Meaning: The Fight for Mountain Rescue
One of the most emotional moments of the event was the participation of The North Face Country Manager, Mr. Elias Kanakis, in the honorary awards ceremony of Messinia Challenge 2026, where he presented an honorary distinction to Mr. Giannis Theocharopoulos for his continuous contribution to mountain rescue and mountain safety.
An experienced mountaineer, mountain guide, and distinguished ski mountaineering champion, Giannis Theocharopoulos has dedicated recent years to changing the way Greece protects those who move in the mountains and outdoors. His efforts intensified after the loss of his 21-year-old son, Theofanis Ermis, in a mountain accident in Tzoumerka in 2022 — a tragedy that harshly exposed the shortcomings of the country’s rescue system.
The issue he seeks to address is both critical and longstanding: in Greece, mountain rescue operations remain slow and fragmented, while in countries with developed mountain tourism, more than 60% of injured individuals are transported to hospital within less than one hour. As he himself emphasizes, the country does not lack helicopters, doctors, or rescuers; what is missing is coordination and training in order to establish an organized aerial and mountain rescue mechanism. In every mountain accident, as he says, “every minute counts.”
Despite the establishment in 2022 of the National Aerial Search and Rescue Mechanism bearing his son’s name, “Theofanis Ermis Theocharopoulos,” its full operation still remains, according to the mountaineering community, largely incomplete. His recognition at Messinia Challenge 2026 highlighted precisely this ongoing effort and served as a reminder that exploring the outdoors — a core value at the heart of The North Face philosophy — also requires a safety framework that protects those who choose to step outside and connect with nature.
Messinia Challenge 2026 welcomed more than 5,500 participants from 34 countries and 4 continents, featuring over 70 activities and 20 Olympic sports, confirming its position as Greece’s largest multisport and wellness event and one of the most important sports tourism events in Europe.
Mr. Elias Kanakis, Country Manager of The North Face, stated:
“At The North Face, we believe that exploration is not simply an activity, but a way of life. Messinia Challenge 2026 perfectly expressed this philosophy by connecting sports with nature, wellness, and authentic experiences. We are especially happy to have participated in an event that inspires people to go outdoors, stay active, and discover unique destinations such as Messinia.”
